ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Art League of Lincoln appreciates our leadership team, board, staff and volunteers for their care and attention towards making the 2026 Feats of Clay exhibit and reception a success.

There are so many moving parts that must line up behind the scenes, it is important to know who the key players were in this orchestra of tasks.

We wish to show our gratitude for our Bronze and Copper sponsors as well as our Merit Award donors. We also want to acknowledge the cooperation and support that we receive from Gladding McBean for this competition and in many other ways during the year.

In addition, the City of Lincoln has been an ardent supporter of the revival of the national Feats of Clay competition and we greatly appreciate them.

PETER PINNELL

Peter Pinnell is one of the most talented and accomplished ceramic artists in America. His work as an artist and his gift for teaching is highly respected among ceramic artists and Educators. Before Peter earned his MFA in Art at the University of Colorado, he was a studio potter for 12 years. His academic career at the

University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UN-Lincoln),

resulted in the creation of award winning and innovative programs that empowered students to operate galleries, and elevated their college arts department to top ten status.

Peter also teaches workshops around the country, has served two years as National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) as President, and was named Fellow of their council. As an artist, Peter continues to show his work in exhibits with high acclaim. He has also authored over 50 articles in national and international journals.

After retiring in 2025, Peter has continued his art journey as an exhibit juror from Baltimore, MD, to Lincoln, CA. He holds the position of Professor Emeritus from UN-Lincoln. The Art League of Lincoln wishes to offer Peter a warm welcome to Lincoln, CA as he adjudicates the 2026 Feats of Clay

Many people know about the National Exhibit, Feats of Clay that began in 1986 as a local ceramic art collaboration between Lincoln Arts and Gladding McBean in 1987.  This exhibit was held at the factory in a kiln spanning 30ft in diameter. That kiln is still frozen in time to this day with display pedestals is it was in 2011 when it closed.

Since then, the Art League took over the exhibit, but on a smaller local scale as Small Feats of Clay. In 2024, the Art league decided it was time to bring Feats of Clay back to it glory. The month prior to its revival show, the Art League held a “Prequel Show” to educate the community about the history or Lincoln, Gladding McBean, Feats of Clay, and the Art League of Lincoln. When Feats of Clay show opened in 2024, there were well over 200 artists and spectators lining up for the opening reception. It was a momentous event.

Artists from 35 states participated in the show this year. In 2026 alone, we added 11 new states. We received correspondence from all over the country from artists expressing their honor to be a part of the show asking that we keep it alive for future artists to enjoy. Our goal is to do just that.

This year, we celebrated our 3rd year of reviving Feats of Clay and it was another huge success around the country. We received nearly 400 art pieces and nearly 150 artists. We gave out nearly $6,500 in awards, and opened to another large reception.  Our Juror, Peter Pinnell, from Lincoln, Nebraska, said this was one of the finest shows he juried. Ray Gonzales, a native of Lincoln and professor of ceramic art at Sierra College and a renowned artists, curated the show.

The City of Lincoln is a big supporter of this event, as well as our arts education and public art programs.  We hold a fundraising campaign each winter to fund the awards, reception, and other costs associated with this show.  The Art League continues to provide programs like the Feats of Clay each year because of community support.  We also received sponsorships from several clay industry leaders including, Gladding McBean, Mission Clay/Laguna Clay, Alpha Fired Arts, IMCO, Mudd Tools, and many large firms that believe in the benefit Exhibits like Feats of Clay places on the art economy.

Another valuable source of funding comes from private donors and endowments through local foundations. We have many loyal supporters who know that Feats of Clay once put Lincoln on the map for clay art exhibits. Each year, universities, art institutes, and private artists prepare their best work for this show. One of the benefits we offer to these artists are Merit Awards, which are funds that help cover the artist’s cost of shipping ceramic artwork across the country. Our individual donors play a large role in sponsoring Merit Awards.

We would love your support for this show either financially or by volunteering. Check out our Get Involved page to learn more about being a team member.

Feats of Clay is a celebration of Lincoln’s rich

clay deposits discovered in the late 1800’s, the

establishment of the Gladding, McBean clay

factory, and ensuing terra cotta art and industrial sewer pipes that supported infrastructure post WWII in communities in the Western Region of the United States. Those accomplishments alone are significant, but Gladding McBean also has a strong following in dinnerware, most notably Fiesta ware, made famous by Jackie Kennedy.

In 1987, Feats of Clay opened as a regional exhibit and grew to be a national exhibit. The artwork was displayed in a large walk-in kiln at

the Gladding McBean factory. Exhibit visitors were transported to the factory from the art gallery, often in antique vehicles to see the artwork in the kiln gallery.

In 2011, due to unforeseen circumstances, the exhibit was discontinued. In 2012, the

Art League of Lincoln was established as a Non-Profit 501(c)3 community arts organization. In 2024, it reopened the show as a regional contest. The year following it launched the show to the nation. This year marks the second year Feats of Clay has been a national show since its revival in 2024.

For over 150 years, Lincoln has been known for its clay reputation. The community, regional supporters, and state supporters are now seeing that Feats of Clay and Clay Fest, our annual sculpting festival, are here to stay!

The following is a snapshot of how this exhibit has grown since its revival in 2024. We publish

the Call in national ceramic art magazines and our Call to Artist is published on caFE’. We also

reach out to Universities with thriving ceramic arts departments, private and public ceramic studios, and artists.
