Honorable Mention: Main street (Sierra Hills Framing photographic image by Rhonda Campbell) This piece, like “Fall in Lincoln” captures beautifully the light and character of our historic downtown. I love it! I was told that I could only choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd … but, being an artist myself, I have a hard time coloring inside the lines. Thus the Honorable Mention!

2nd: Jean Cross “GMB factory,Lincoln, CA” restored pen and ink. This 1915 pen and ink drawing of the Gladding McBean plant as it existed at the turn of the twentieth century is simply remarkable. How was it done?! The angle suggest observation from a hot air ballon or perhaps an aerial photograph from the open cockpit of biplane. I can stand and look at the details in this work and the story they reveal for hours. My challenge was, as much as I love this piece, the artist created it over 100 years ago. Not just that but the artist who submitted it for this show didn’t create the original drawing. How could I judge it in this current show? Thinking on it, I realized the piece was painstakingly restored (sometimes one pixel at a time) by Jean Cross, a wonderful artist in her own right, and that the drawing as submit represents the work of not one but two Lincoln artists bound together across the century.

3rd: “Terminus”…wood pyrography Train image by Gloria Sutton Wow … just wow. The last time I attempted to use this medium I was ten years old and in Boy Scouts. It didn’t turn out well. I literally have no idea how Gloria is able to accomplish such precision and detail. The Hatching, Cross-hatching, Contour, Stippling, thick and thin lines are hard enough in pen and ink but this piece takes things to a whole new level. Well done!

1st: “Fall in Lincoln” (Diane Pargament watercolor/5th St.) This piece caught my eye the minute I walked in the door. It’s color palette and composition pulled me across the room wanting to see more. I wasn’t disappointed. This wonderful little streetscape perfectly captures the “Hallmark” quality of our historic downtown.
