About

ARTIST’S STATEMENT: My background knowledge in photography was on a self-taught basis and from photography courses at community colleges. The major bit of knowledge I learned was composition. I was drawn to landscape, architecture, and more – basically, I love to capture “LIFE” on film. As a black and white film photographer, I worked in my darkroom for six years, but now I am strictly digital. I’ve always felt one had to know everything about a subject before putting oneself out there, as in photography, and that is probably what held me back for a long time and being a late bloomer. I know now that is not the case! We continue to learn along the way – something new every day – and I believe that’s what keeps artists going.

BIO: Maria Soto has exhibited her photography in many Sacramento galleries since 2003. She has been a featured artist in numerous exhibits, and participates in various art shows in Sacramento and Placer County. In 2010 she was the sole photographic juror for 48 Natoma Gallery’s “Interior Scapes Show.”

Maria has expanded her horizons to include acrylic, watercolor, and Sumi ink painting, as well as mixed media. Her most recent accomplishment was writing a book that showcases 13 artists, including herself, and documenting their stories in black and white photography. It was published in April 2021, is available online, and is titled, “Artful Journeys – When you speak with an artist, Discoveries are made”.
